Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is famous in Western culture for the photo of the lone student standing defiantly in front of a Chinese Army tank. When we asked our guide what her understanding of events was she replied that she knew about the student protests but when the students threw petrol over some soldiers and set fire to them, resulting in the death of several, the authorities were left with no choice but to crack down on them. So whose version is correct?

But check out the photos...this is one vast square. With Chairman's Mao's mausoleum in the background.

The entrance to the Forbidden City with the only person whose picture we saw anywhere...Chairman Mao.

These shots show you how big this square is.

Notice the guards always to attention...no slouching "trini style"

..and the construction hoarding covered in murals and slogans exhorting you to work harder.
